A better light for your desk

How to compare task lighting without choosing by brightness alone.

Start with where the light lands

A useful desk lamp puts light on the page or keyboard without shining directly into your eyes. Before shopping, mark the available base space and consider whether the lamp must reach across a monitor. A clamp frees up desk space, but first check the desk thickness, edge shape, and clearance underneath.

Look for control, not just output

Adjustable brightness is useful when the same desk serves daytime work and evening reading. Compare the lowest setting as well as the brightest one. A movable arm and a shade that hides the light source can matter more than a long feature list. Reflective desktops may still produce glare, so placement matters.

Check the everyday details

Find out whether the light source is replaceable and what happens if a proprietary power supply fails. Confirm the input voltage for your location and whether an adapter is included. Touch controls should be within easy reach, especially if the lamp will sit behind a screen.

Before you decide

Measure the desk, choose a base or clamp, and note the reach you need. Then compare adjustment range, power requirements, controls, and return terms. A lamp that fits the room and can be repositioned easily is a more practical purchase than one selected only for its appearance.
